Cellphone manufacturers are doing their best to design full-screen smart phones. We've seen bangs, perforated screens, pop-ups and spin-outs, all in an attempt to get the full screen as far as possible. A new patent from OPPO gives us another possibility for a full-screen handset.
So far, all the pop-up cameras are usually located at the top of the phone, but an OPPO patent found in the CNPPA (China National Intellectual Property Office) database gives us the first time to see the pop-up camera installed on the side.
The patent shows that the pop-up camera module is placed on the right side of the phone. The ingenious design allows the pop-up camera to be flush with the side of the fuselage when not in use. we can also see there are two cameras under the pop-up device, as well as the led flash. As with most of the designs on the market, the phone appears to have a power button on the right, and the volume control key and SIM card jack are on the left. The speaker, Type-C interface and headphone jack are located at the bottom of the phone.
There is no clear indication of when the patent might be applied to real mobile products, and handset manufacturers typically don't put all patents into practice. But the side pop-up camera does look like another viable solution for a selfie camera, and it's probably a matter of time before it's applied.
